The Bad Romance music video is not just Gaga’s most famous music video, but one of the most famous in the world. With over a billion views on YouTube, the music video is one of the most recognizable in pop music. But what is going on? Burning beds, sunglasses made out of razor blades, and monster like creatures emerging from strange coffins? The music video is most definitely on the more confusing side, so here today I am going to break it down for you.
The plot of the music video actually makes a lot of sense once you know it. In the music video, Lady Gaga is being kidnapped and sold to the Russian mob and then kills her captor. At the start of the music video, she is pulled out of a white coffin in a bathhouse. She is then taken by two supermodels who appear to baptize her in vodka. She is then forced to preform and dance for a group of male mobsters, one of which becomes her highest bidder and buys her for a million rubles (or a little more than 16,000 dollars in USD). After Gaga is bought, she is forced into fantastical outfits and keeps getting forced to preform for her captor. During the climax of the music video however, Gaga has decided she’s had enough. As she approaches a bed in a polar bear skin coat with her capture awaiting her, Gaga suddenly lights the bed on fire, her captor going with it. At the end of the music video, Gaga is seen lying on what remains of the bed, smoking a cigarette, with the charred remains of her captor.
The music video itself is one of Gaga’s most haunting, and despite the evolution in her work, still a true show of Gagaism.
